15 Film Simulation Recipes So Far This Year

Fujicolor

As I was reviewing my different film simulation recipes, I realized that I have posted 15 different ones so far in 2019. That’s quite a few! I bet I made close to 25 more that were “failures” and were never shared on this blog. I have several in the works right now, and I hope at least a couple of them will be successful, and will be published in the coming weeks or months. I also have some crazy ideas that I want to try out, and maybe a recipe or two will come out of that, we’ll see.

More of these recipes are based on Classic Chrome than any other film simulation, which is probably because it’s my favorite for color. Eterna and Acros, which are also great film simulations, are tied for second most. PRO Neg. Std has two. Provia, Velvia and Astia have one each, while PRO Neg. Hi doesn’t have any. I would like to do more with those, so maybe I will come up with something soon. I also think Acros is overdue for a new recipe.

Which of these film simulation recipes that I posted in 2019 are your favorite? Which one would you like to try but have yet to do so? Let me know in the comments!

    Kudos to you!

But Fuji really needs get their act together to finally open C1-C7 to offer individually selected automatic white balances.
Your film simulations are amazing but if I have to adjust the white balance according to your presets each and every time it actually defeats the purpose… ^^

I definitely agree with that. There’s some big firmware update coming, so I am hoping, but I’m not holding my breath. Someday, though, it could happen.

        Hi Ritchie!
I really hope for a serious update! Where did you get the infos from that there’s something big in the works?
        Thanks

Fujirumors said big firmware updates are coming, not sure exactly for what cameras or what it will entail. I’m keeping my fingers crossed but not holding my breath….

I have just spent today in London shooting with your Agfa vintage simulation. I have yet to look at the images, but I had a blast! Thank you for your efforts, it’s greatly appreciated. May I ask how long it takes for you to put a simulation together? I can imagine it must be a lot of time.

Sometimes it’s quick. I get some inspiration and get close on the first try, so it doesn’t take long to refine it to a finished recipe. Sometimes it takes a long time, and I try and fail and try and fail, and sometimes I get close, but I am not completely happy, so I play around with it awhile until I get it right. Sometimes I never get it right. Thank you for asking!

I mostly use your Kodachrome and Ilford HP5 Plus recipes but I think I’ll try your Kodachrome 64 recipe for an upcoming photo walk.

I really do like Fuji Industrial. At first glance it looks quite neutral but it has a certain quality to its color. I like to use it for anything city related.

    • Ritchie Roesch · September 15, 2019

Thank you! I find it to be surprisingly good for urban scenes, too.

Your Kodachrome II and 64 emulations have been my go to settings ever since I read your blog. Hoping that Cinestill 50D is one of the new simulations you’re working on.

    • alczer · September 15, 2019

      + Cinestill 50D

    • Ritchie Roesch · September 15, 2019

I like those, too. I have attempted CineStill 50D, it’s a tough one.

Can’t really make up my mind which I like most…
Probably Vintage Kodachrome, Kodakchrome II and Eterna.

    All great!

    • Ritchie Roesch · September 15, 2019

Thank you! The different Kodachrome recipes are some of my favorite, too.

Good recipies, good eye for color. Does anyone tried these on a x-e2 since those also have classic chrome?

    • Ritchie Roesch · September 16, 2019

Thank you! You can try the XF10 Classic Chrome recipe on the X-E2.

Hi, Ritche. Thanks again for sharing these good film simulation. Appreciate your hard work for the sims.

At the same time, i am wondering what is your thought on the Newly annouced XA-7?

  9. tattwah · September 17, 2019

Also, your simulation are just amazing (Ilford HP 5 is my most favorite). Since using the Fuji Sims and JPEG based engine for X series camera, for me personally, for my personal work, near zero post processing is needed. Unless it’s event shot who do for my organization.

    • Ritchie Roesch · September 17, 2019

Thank you, I appreciate your kind words of encouragement. Shooting JPEGs has saved me an incredible amount of time, and that’s something I am very grateful for.

I’m also praying for the custom WhiteBalance for each Custom user preset
