X-Pro3 To Have New Film Simulation: Classic Negative

Fujifilm Classic Negative

The upcoming Fujifilm X-Pro3, which will feature an unusual rear screen, will have a new film simulation called Classic Negative, which is supposed to resemble Superia film, according to Fujifilm. I get a lot of requests for Superia, so I’m very happy to see this as a new film simulation. Yea!

Fujirumors stated that the X-Pro3 will have some additional adjustments for in-camera RAW processing, such as Clarity. I welcome this because the more tools that Fujifilm provides, the more easily I can achieve a desired look in-camera. Fujifilm is one of only a few companies that take camera-made JPEGs seriously, and is one of the big reasons why I appreciate their products. Shooting JPEGs saves me so much time, allowing my photography to be more productive while simultaneously allowing me to spend more time elsewhere, such as with my family.

I hope that Fujifilm makes these things–the Classic Negative film simulation and the additional tools–available to other cameras, such as the X-T3 and X-T30, which share the same sensor and processor as the upcoming X-Pro3. There is, according to Fujirumors, some big firmware updates on the horizon, and I hope that these are a part of that. Sometimes, when a new feature is included in a new camera, Fujifilm will update older cameras to include it as well, and sometimes they don’t. So it’s really hard to know. I will keep my fingers crossed.

I could imagine this kind of screen for all Fuji cameras quite well…

You know, I haven’t yet decided if I like it or not, but I am leaning towards liking it.

Hope that the cute film tab graphics interface is open for you to add your own display for your sweet custom settings.

    • Ritchie Roesch · September 20, 2019

That would be really cool! I doubt it can be customized that way, though.

Hope the custom setting name is one of the optional data fields. Film box tab is nice gimmick, but not that useful information to have in that visible place.

Fuji is really making a difference from X-T3 now. Probably with the price too. Titanium body, new VF, two color LCDs. Those goodies are not coming cheap.

Fujifilm is clearly separating the X-Pro3 from the X-T3, which I think is good, but I don’t think everyone will appreciate the changes.

If they take the new film simulation and make it a firware for the X-Pro2 that would satisfied me perfectly. I do not care for the look of the new X-Pro3. They should have left the outside body the same and made the eye adjustment so that you could lock it in place.

I hope they do add the new film simulation to all X-Trans III cameras. I don’t think they will, but they should in my opinion, just to be nice.

That would kick after market prices of X-Pro2 to the orbit. That new film sim is just about the only X-Pro3 feature getting any love from the fans right now. A small chance for X-T3 and X-T30, not a chance for earlier models.

I’m thinking that the X-T3 and X-T30 might get it, maybe, but I doubt any older cameras will.

Honestly, I’m loving this new design of the X-Pro3. Since long I’ve always used my tilt screen at 90° degrees, because I’m tall, it easier to compose I think. This will be awesome! I’m also liking the small screen, as i already love it on my XH1, and here it becomes even more important.

And Ritchie, I have a funny story to share with you and the readers, haha. Yesterday I was photographing a “youth for climate” protest. Since a few months I have your “Agfa Optima” setting saved as my Custom 1. The day before though, I decided to replace it with your Kodachrome 64 preset for the protest shoot. I went in the menu, changed the settings, saved and was done. After I was done shooting, I scrolled through my photos on the camera and I was delighted how they came out. Transferred to the phone, even more happy, they looked really, really good. I shot everything wide open with the 35mm f2. Then yesterday evening I looked at my photos in RAW X Studio on the computer and realized that something was off. The film simulation didn’t say Chrome Classic but Standard/Provia! I thought they didn’t got transferred correctly or something, until I checked my camera in the Q-Menu and it was still on the Agfa Optima settings (H-1, S+2, C-2). Although I saved the Kodachrome 64 preset I never activated it, I only changed the Auto WB to R2 B-5, but because of that it has a nice yellow, moody tone. What a really happy accident 🙂
Always activate your presets before shooting 😉

Thank you for sharing! I will have to try the Agfa Optima film simulation recipe with the Kodachrome 64 white balance shift. Sometimes accidents are indeed happy. I’ve made a number of those wonderful “mistakes” myself before.
As for the screen, I’m actually leaning towards liking it. I think I would like it more if the D-Pad was still there, as a concern of mine is that there aren’t enough controls on the body, but maybe I am missing something. It’s a bold concept and I’m glad that Fujifilm has the guts to try it.

Thank you for sharing the story, it is enjoyable to hear from other readers here. And to Ritchie, I am very grateful for your film sims, indeed shooting jpeg save us lots of time and let us focus more on the shooting experience, which is the reason I enjoyed Fuji. I hope the new HDR feature will come to XT3/30 as well, it would be a big help for us JPEG shooter who want to preserve dynamic range.

I agree, the more tools for creating great pictures in-camera, the better. Let’s hope that it migrates to other cameras quickly.

I’m really excited about the additional tools for in camera processing. I am not going to buy an XPro3, but I really hope this filters down to the new X100 model. I’d be all over that.

    • Ritchie Roesch · September 22, 2019

I really hope it does, too, as it is unlikely that I will own the X-Pro3.
