Comparing “Classic Negative” and “Color Negative” Film Simulation Recipes

Someone asked me what the differences are between my “Classic Negative” film simulation recipe and my “Color Negative” film simulation recipe. They’re pretty similar, but they’re not exactly identical. I thought it would be helpful to see them side-by-side, so I applied my “Color Negative” recipe using the in-camera RAW converter on my Fujifilm X-T30 to a few recent exposures that I had captured using my “Classic Negative” recipe. “Color Negative”

As you can see, while they’re quite similar, the “Color Negative” recipe is more saturated, has a tad more contrast, and is a little warmer with a bit more red. The “Classic Negative” recipe is slightly more bland, but with a nice vintage negative-film aesthetic. So which film simulation recipe do you like better, “Classic Negative” or “Color Negative”? Let me know in the comments!

I don’t think this recipe received much fanfare when I published it, but it’s definitely a really good one. I’m glad that you like it!

That classic negative is sublime! I am going to have a try at creating it on my XT2…

Doh! Brain freeze on my end! I put the sim on my 100F and took it out yesterday. Love the colours. I’ve put a shot on instagram and tagged you. I will put some more up later.

Hey Ritchie, I know this is a little late in the game, but I’m still scouring through all the great information you so generously work so hard to provide. I really like the Color Negative best out of the two, the color rendering is just a little more pleasing to my eye.

Hi Ritchie ! I just discovered your website and it’s so rich of informations and so helpful, impressive work, thank you ! By the way, why the color negative is based on fluorescent WB while the classic one is based on Kelvin WB ? They are both really close… if I use fluorescent for the classic one, will it be right ? Thanks !

You can try it and see what you think. When I creating these particular recipes, I was trying different white balances so that each of my 7 custom slots could have a different white balance, and I could avoid changing the WB shifts. It was kind of a workaround for the WB shift problem.

Thank you, it was exactly for the same reason that I’ve asked you 🙂 ! Because my Kelvin slot was already set ! I’ll try it, thanks.
