Fuji X Weekly App: Filtering by Camera or Sensor?

The Fuji X Weekly app has the ability, for Patrons, to filter by Camera or Sensor. It might seem most obvious to pick your camera, but that might not be the best choice. Why? Let me explain.

With each recipe, I only included the cameras that are 100% compatible with that recipe. There are many situations where a recipe is 99% compatible. For example, the Fujifilm X-T4, X100V, X-Pro3 and X-S10 aren’t 100% compatible with X-Trans IV recipes intended for the X-T3 and X-T30, despite having the same sensor. Why? Because the X-T3 and X-T30 models don’t have an option for Grain size, so you’ll have to decide for yourself if it should be Small or Large, and also B&W Toning is different. Because of this, recipes like Kodak Gold 200, Eterna, Kodacolor, and many, many, many more won’t show up if you filter by X-Pro3, for example. They will, however, show up if you filter by X-Trans IV sensor. If you have an X-Pro3, if you filter by Sensor instead of Camera, you’ll see a lot more recipes. In fact, you could filter by both X-Trans III and X-Trans IV!

It’s a similar story if you have, for example, a Fujifilm X-E2. X-Trans I and Bayer recipes will work on your camera, but they’ll look a little different. Those recipes won’t show up if you filter by Camera, but they will if you filter by X-Trans I, X-Trans II and Bayer.

If you have an X-Trans III camera, it makes more sense to filter by Camera because all of the recipes that are compatible will appear (including X-Trans IV recipes that are also compatible). If you have an X-Trans IV camera, it makes more sense to filter by Sensor; however, the X-T3 and X-T30 are an exception, and like X-Trans III, it makes more sense to filter by Camera if you have either of these models. X-Trans II is a mixed bag because not every camera has the same film simulations, so if your model doesn’t have Classic Chrome and the PRO Neg. options, it will be better to filter by Camera, but otherwise by Sensor so that you can also access the X-Trans I and Bayer sensors. X-Trans I and Bayer cameras have a similar limitation (not all models have all of the film simulations), so filtering by Camera will reveal what’s for certain compatible, and filtering by Sensor will reveal what may or might not be compatible.

I hope this isn’t too confusing. My recommendation is to try both filtering options, and decide what makes the most sense for you.

    Hi Ritchie

Firstly thanks for all the work that went into this app!
I have a few questions though: becoming a Patreon is 21.99€ (InApp purchase) and in the app it says $19.99/year

I do understand the concept of monetarism but I honestly hate subscription. I personally think it’s a bit too pricey for a data bank, or to just simply filter by camera/sensor.

Maybe it’s just me, but I think if there was a $5 / 10/ 15 / 20 scaling according what people like to donate would be more clever!

    Just my 2c

Hi! The $19.99 is US dollars, and Apple converts it to other currencies (I don’t have control over that, or at least limited control).
About the price. I figured $20 a year is less than $2 a month, which shouldn’t be too bad for most people. The reason for the price is 1) the amount of time and money it takes to create an app is significant and 2) the amount of time and money it will take to do the things that I hope to do for the Fujifilm community is even more. This really is just the beginning, but I can’t do it alone. So the Patron thing is more of a way to support these efforts than anything else. I do like the idea of scaling it, I’ll have to figure out how to incorporate that. Thanks for the comment!

Everyone has to eat, and they get to choose how much and whether it’s chicken or fish or a bowl of cold acorn mush.

To be honest, I think that $19.99 is a small price to pay for all of the work that has already gone into FujiXWeekly. The blog and access to all the recipes. It only ‘seems’ pricey because it looks like all they are getting for the purchase is the ability to filter by camera.

People who may not know about the blog and all of the work, will complain about the price for such a small addition, but if it was marketed as a free app for patron subscribers they’ll pay the money at the drop the hat. 😃

I’m gonna pay when I can

Hi Robin, it’s a free app. The $19.95 to be a patron unlock sorting by camera and simulation and early access to 7 new recipes. The free app is very useful without being a patron.

      • Ritchie Roesch · December 2, 2020

Yes! The app without the Patron access is still a very useful tool indeed!

Thanks so much! Being a Patron is more about supporting what’s happening. There’s so much more that the app will eventually do, plus non-app things (and bringing the app to Android) that all cost money, that will be a huge benefit to the Fujifilm community. Being a Patron allows that to become a reality. You are making it happen! As you said, it’s so much more than unlocking some features. It’s being a part of something bigger. I appreciate the comment and support!

The app is sweet! I like that I can filter by camera and film simulation. I am also a patron.

I’ve already marked my favourites and added the app to the first page of my iPhone 11 Pro Home Screen.

    Hi! Great app! Thank You!
Would be nice to mark my 7 quick menue savings in the app. Not only my favorites. I think a list with 7 entries for each camera model woud be great. …just as an idea.
Have a nice season, with regads

That’s a great idea! I appreciate the suggestion!

Hello, long time fan of your work and subscriber here. For the app, will you be adding a way for us who have multiple bodies to bucket our favorites easier by camera and sort them in the order we want so we just open the app, select our body (without scrolling a list) and see our presets per that body in our order?

    • Ritchie Roesch · December 6, 2020

Yes! There will be an update at some point that will greatly improve the app, including this! I’m prioritizing getting the Android version out, so that will delay it a little, but hopefully not too deeply into 2021 and the app will see some nice changes and added features!
