According to Fujirumors, Fujifilm will release a new X-series camera in 2021. It was previously reported that the X-E4 was the last with the X-Trans IV sensor and the upcoming X-H2, to be released sometime in early 2022, will have a new sensor (X-Trans V, most likely). So what is this new mystery camera?
Back in May I said, “I wouldn’t be surprised to see Fujifilm release a Bayer camera later this year, maybe an X-A8 or (less likely) an X-T300 or (even less likely) an XF20. If it does happen, you heard it here first, but if it doesn’t happen, well, don’t be surprised, because it probably won’t. It might, though.” Well, it looks like maybe I was right, assuming that it ends up being a Bayer sensor X-series camera. Personally, I’m hoping for an XF20. We’ll see.
Of course, what would be amazing is a Monochrome-only camera! Technically speaking, this wouldn’t be X-Trans, because it wouldn’t have a color filter array. While this is certainly a possibility, it seems highly unlikely, which is unfortunate, because I’d be much more excited for a black-and-white camera than a Bayer model.
I don’t have any inside information, so I can only speculate. Logically speaking, unless Fujifilm changed their minds and they produce one more X-Trans IV camera (X80?), or they introduce the new sensor with a camera other than the X-H2 (X-T40?), then it makes sense that it’ll be a Bayer or Monochrome model, with Bayer the most likely (by far) option. I wonder if Fujifilm will announce this camera on September 2nd during the X Summit, or if they’ll wait for another date? I suppose we’ll know soon enough.
Fujifilm should bring out a X-H2 because it’s is still one of the Cameras that Fujifilm had brought out.
I believe that the X-H2 is slated for late-winter or early-spring, so not too much longer now.
Maybe they could make a very simple, stripped-down, inexpensive, entry-level model to entice people to try their product line.
The X-E4 is basically that for X-Trans, the X-T200 or X-A7 for Bayer. But maybe something along the lines of an X-M2 (an X-A7 but with an X-Trans IV sensor instead of Bayer)?
Thanks for the hot tip! I think there’s a small but dedicated group of people who would love to see an “X80”, an updated X70 that (for me) would remain “wide” at 18.5/28.
I think that “small” group is indeed dedicated, yet probably bigger than you think. I know for certain that I’d buy it!
Around here those models you mention are all $1,000 (CDN) and up. I’m thinking more like half that money; a simplified, ‘photographer’s camera’ without the complexity that manufacturers seem to feel is so necessary today. They can leave off the video too, as far as I’m concerned. 😀
It would be nice for a cheap model; I think the best alternative is a used camera. For example, the X-T1 can be found for fairly inexpensive and is wonderful, probably much better than a cheap new model would be.
I would order an X-80 sight unseen, based on how much I’ve loved my X-70. While I have several other cameras, the X-70 is the one I can put in my pocket when I’m not sure I want to bring a larger camera – as a result, it’s given me many photo opportunities I would otherwise have missed. There is no other camera this size with this image quality – please bring us an update!
I’d order an X80 sight unseen, too, on the day it’s announced. I just hope Fujifilm actually makes it someday.

Monochrome! Yet there have been stirrings of the innovation of curved sensors. All the same, as the XT-4 is still relatively new and a XT-5 still on the horizon, it was the rear monitor that was a deal breaker for me in the XT-4. The emphasis on blogging and movies has reached its zenith I hope, but the XH-2 may sway me.
I have a feeling that the X-H2 is going to sway a lot of people. I think it’s going to be a bit of a shocker, in a good way. I don’t have any inside information, just the bits of “rumors” I’ve seen.
I’d opt for a revised X-S10. The X-S20 may confirm the birth of a new breed of prosumer Fujifilm cameras embracing amateurs and enthusiasts taking distance from CanoSonyKon as well as micro four-thirds users who’d like to run a complementary APS system.
One thing’s sure, Fuji needs one or more credible third party partner lens makers. Sony is catchnig up with a plethora of very good menses either Sony/Zeiss or third party labelled…
I think the X-S10 is still pretty new. I’d be surprised if it is replaced before 2023, but you never know. The new camera is supposedly the X-T30 II, but I don’t know any more beyond that.
