Fujifilm X100V (X-Trans IV) Film Simulation Recipe: Vintage Color

This particular Film Simulation Recipe is one that I’m especially proud of. I was tasked to create some settings that mimic the aesthetic of Lisa Sorgini’s Behind Glass project, and I believe I got pretty close. I have no idea if Lisa shoots digital or film, and, if film, what film and process, but my suspicion is that it’s digital post-processed to have a vintage analog look. This recipe captures that aesthetic quite well. I call it Vintage Color.

What I like most about this “Vintage Color” recipe, and it was a great surprise when I discovered it, is that it’s pretty close to the aesthetic of famed Hudson River School painter Albert Bierstadt, particularly his Yosemite paintings. It may not mimic any specific film, but, no doubt about it, this is an artist’s recipe! I know that many of you will absolutely love it, and it will quickly become a fan favorite. It’s a personal favorite of mine.

Lower Yosemite Falls Mist – Yosemite NP, CA – Fujifilm X100V – “Vintage Color”

This “Vintage Color” recipe is compatible with the Fujifilm X-Pro3, X100V, X-T4, X-S10, X-E4 and X-T30 II cameras. As a reminder, Clarity causes the camera to pause for a moment after each shot; alternatively, try using a mild diffusion filter, like 1/8 Black Pro Mist or 5% CineBloom, for a similar effect.

Highlight: +2
Shadow: +3
Color: +1
Noise Reduction: -4
Sharpness: -2
Clarity: -2
Grain Effect: Strong, Large
Color Chrome Effect: Strong
Color Chrome Effect Blue: Strong
White Balance: 7350K, -1 Red & -4 Blue
ISO: Auto, up to ISO 6400
Exposure Compensation: +1/3 to +2/3 (typically)

      She shot mostly on Polaroid. Definitely a distinctive style. This one isn’t intended to mimic her aesthetic, but I can see it being somewhere in the neighborhood, yet certainly not the same, either.

        i like images that have a luminescent patina where the images have a “mother color”. i was deceived by your landscapes at first. they’re almost monochromatic lol. it forced me to look closer which i normally don’t do with photographs. honestly, penn is the only one who draws me in. do you know harry gruyaert??

        gruyaert uses more darks for drama but he has a similar patina.

    Good evening Sir, I like very much your work with Fuji simulations…Do you think that “vintage color” wlll give good results in winter scenes? Actualy, here in Quebec, it is white, white….

      I’m not sure, it might, but it might be too warm, possibly. Maybe try Kodachrome 1 and Reala 100, and see if you like either of those.

    Your examples look georgeous, Ritchie. For the subjects I tried it I got a way too green cast on it, but once I replaced the film simulation with Classic Negative I was very pleased (which I am with so many of your recipes) with ‘Vintage Color CN’ as my go-to-recipe for rainy city scapes (as here e.g. https://digitalzelluloid.wordpress.com/2022/02/01/3177/ and https://digitalzelluloid.wordpress.com/2022/02/01/3186/#jp-carousel-3191).

    I heard about this site while watching a YouTube video (the second viewing as I missed it the first time!!). So much stuff here to read about and to get involved with. I have downloaded the App and have (partly) written two recipes across to my X-T4. I can’t do everything it says on the recipe as I can’t find certain parameters and others are greyed out/unavailable to me. Still, this has been a welcome eye opener… thank you for your hard work and continued efforts. I’ll be sure to donate 👍🏼

    This recipe is something, thank you for ceating and sharing it ! It makes me think of the Adox color implosion in some way, especially on the “urban reflection” shot. Maybe you can give it a try, for a future recipe ? That would be amazing, as the color implosion was truly an amazing one.

    Hi Richie, Thanks for all the recipe you designed and make the Fuji camera a lot more fun to use. I have a question though, I have a XT-3 and try to set up this Vintage color onto it, while I follow, I cannot dial in the exact white balance value (7350K), there’s only preset K number I can choose from, what did I do wrong? Thanks.

      This recipe isn’t compatible with the X-T3. Only X-Pro3 and newer models. Besides Kelvin, your other issues are Color Chrome FX Blue, Clarity, and Grain size.
