What’s in the July issue? The cover story is A Whale of a Tale, which is a photoessay of a recent whale-watching boat excursion, as captured with a Fujifilm X100V using the Kodak Tri-X 400 Film Simulation Recipe. There are a total of 28 photographs this month, including the cover image (above). I hope that you find it enlightening, entertaining, and inspiring!

Try as I may, I have even less hits when shooting BW, are there certain “must knows” for it? Like shoot at a higher aperature then say 1.4? Underexpose? Slower shutter speed? Its so annoying. In color I may get 8 hits out of every 300 shots, in BW its like 3 out of 300.

      I would recommend this book:

With B&W, you have to think in grey, and look for light, tones, and shapes.

As far as the aperture, I personally almost never shoot “wide open” and most often use between f/4 and f/11, which for most lenses is where the optimal optical quality is found. Everyone’s style is different, though.

Hey, the author is from my state! Might have to check it out. I’ve been meaning to buy my first photography book but so many options…

        It’s a great book, worth reading cover-to-cover.

Absolutely love the photo through the window. So many layers to explore. I love the Tri-X 400 recipe; it’s custom #1 on my X-Pro3.
