Some of the RNI’s Kodak profiles look surprisingly similar to Cinestill. And they are profiled to the x-trans cameras too.
Overall, I’m finding the RNI film profiles (google for All Films 5) more sophisticated and accurate than the Fuji’s built-in simulations. Again, google for RNI Fuji Pro 160NS vs Fuji Classic Neg comparisons.
I’ve used RNI. In fact, I have two of their apps on my phone right now. They do good work. Alien Skin Exposure is probably better than RNI for desktop. However, I almost never use RNI (or Exposure) because it adds significant time to my workflow and I’d be less productive. Also, for me, shooting recipes is much more fun. I prefer to spend the least amount of time possible sitting in front of a computer or fiddling on my phone. That’s just me, everyone is different. Thanks for the comment!

I have a couple of questions
1. About White balance shift. Some of your recipes require tweak it. I cannot change it from within the Q button, but I have to do it from the Menu instead.
The problem is that the configuration I make will have effect in all 7 memory banks of my X100F.
How do I do to keep more than one recipe?
2. My preferred color photographer is Saül Leiter. When will you publish a recipe for his color?

Regarding the White Balance Shift, only the newest cameras, X-Pro3 and newer) can save the shift within the Q menu. I wish all Fujifilm cameras could. The best workaround is to use different white balances, because the camera will remember a shift per white balance. Or, somehow keep track of the shift and remember to change it each time.
Regarding Saul Leiter, I believe he used Kodachrome very early on, but switched to color negative film, and he was known for using any film, especially generic store brand and preferring it to be expired. So it’s hard to know exactly.

I just put the WB shift as part of the custom name when I save the recipe. That allows me to at least see what the shift is. An example name would be “FUJI PRO 400H R2B1”. I wish they would update my firmware to be able to save the WB shift for each custom setting like the XPro 3 does. Maybe I will just buy an XPro 3 to solve the problem. There goes my GAS again.
Lol! It’s definitely more convenient on the newer cameras that can save the shift. It’s hard to resist the G.A.S.

An XT2 has been enough for me. I can get most of what I need colour wise with your recipes.
What makes this special for me? I’m not a colour person! I’m actually a well-known artist for very
specific black-and-white created with my Nikon gear. With that in mind, the Fuji Acros mode in
my T2 has been fun to play with. I spent years training myself to see is in B&W for the final RAW edit.
As many say, they like Fuji as it’s a joy to shoot JPEGs! I agree and your recipes have made my

Just a quick question, would any of the newer simulations work on a gfx 100 system?
With the GFX100, I’m not sure if it’s more similar to the X-T3 & X-T30, or more like the X-Pro3, X-T4, X100V, & X-S10. The GFX-50S is more like the X-T3 & X-T30, but the GFX100 is newer, so I’m not sure. The X-T3 & X-T30 recipes (as well as X-Trans III recipes) work on the GFX-50S but the results are very slightly different (still very close, though). I imagine that either the X-T3 & X-T30 or the X-Pro3, X-T4, X100V & X-S10 will be compatible with the GFX100. Sorry that my answer isn’t more definitive.
Kodak T-Max 400 recipe and image write delay? This recipe produces some great photos and behaves much like the film version. I have noticed something though. It appears that there is a write delay when shooting with this recipe. I have the X100V. Has anyone reported the same? Thank you for the film recipes and this site!
I believe it is the clarity setting (+4 for this recipe) which is causing the write delay.
Yes, exactly! Unfortunately Clarity slows things down.
I appreciate the feedback. Glad that you like the recipe. The delay is from Clarity. Ensuring Boost Mode is enabled helps a little, but Clarity slows things down, unfortunately.

Hi, thank you very much for the work put into creating these recipes. I use a few of them on my X-T4 and X-T3. A question I have is how to keep these simulations when downloading in Capture One software? Reading the Base Characteristics shows me AUTO but not sure it’s the same simulation as the recipe. Any info on this?
So, Capture One (and every other RAW editor) will read what the JPEG settings were and will apply its interpretation of those settings to the RAW file, but some things (like Dynamic Range) aren’t applied, and the things that are applied won’t appear exactly the same. There’s really no way to create an identical image to the sooc JPEG without a lot of fiddling.
Is that true for Fuji X Raw software as well?
Not for X RAW Studio, which uses the camera to process the RAW file. It’s the same as reprocessing in-camera, except that you can see it bigger on your computer and save an unlimited number of recipes.

Have you ever tried to recreate JPEG conversions of other Camera manufacturers?
I am trying to simulate the look of not a film but the default JPEG Conversion of my old Canon DSLR. The Image it produced, especially for protraits, is a look i am really missing on my Fuji. I think the Kodak Gold comes quite close but not exactly. All my tries to get that look failed really miserable. Would you be interested to try your amazing hand at this? I could provide some sample images (in RAW & JPEG) to show the look I am aiming for.

I have owned fuji cameras for years and have only just realised this is a thing! The Kodachrome simulation for the X100V is really nice. I am mostly a Black and white photographer and struggle to get consistency in my colour work, but this has helped!
I am also just discovering the Fujifilm X Raw software and really like how you can use these recipes with that too. If only you could output images in Tiff format, but for now its been great.

Hey Ritchie, love these recipes, thank you for your hard work! I have a question, which you may have half answered above, just want to clarify. At the moment I shoot in RAW only, so I’ve been making sure that Lightroom imported and applied the camera settings so that my RAW files would have the right film simulation in tact. Works great for the default simulations. Is there any way to do this with recipes? i.e to import all the other settings that get changed (shadows, highlights, clarity, etc..)? Sorry if this is more specific to editing software than your recipes, I just can’t figure out how to recreate something in post that looked great on camera without shooting in JPEG. Thanks!
Lightroom (and really every RAW processor) doesn’t apply its interpretation to every JPEG setting, unfortunately. It would be nice if they did! Like you found out, many of the settings just aren’t interpreted by the software. I think a nice alternative would be if Fujifilm cameras could save in TIFF. The X-T4 can I believe when using X RAW Studio, but not sooc. If you could save in TIFF in-camera, then you’d have more editing flexibility if you needed to post-process, or if you liked the sooc image, then you’re done.

I just bought a XT-4 and I’m just a hobbyist photographer so forgive me if this question is silly. When applying these recipe settings, what image quality should I use? Raw? Fine? Normal?

Try Kodachrome 64, Kodachrome II, Ektachrome 100SW, Portra 160, Kodacolor, Eterna, and Agfa Optima. There are versions of these for the X-T1 and X-T3. There will some variations in the exact output, but they’ll look very similar to each other. I don’t think that there are any B&W recipes that are close matches. Hope this helps!

I most often use Multi, but sometimes Spot. It doesn’t matter because each exposure should be judged individually. The suggested exposure compensation is just to nudge you in what’s hopefully the right direction.
This project is great, you are doing an awesome job! I moved to X-T3 from 13 years of Nikon (D90, Z50) since few weeks, and I’m going crazy for all this simulation possibilities, like a kid in a toy shop…
I’m wondering if, provided the parameters to be the same, recipes born for X-trans III will work the same on X-trans IV cameras like mine. In other words, are the recipes upwards-compatible?
X-Trans III recipes are fully compatible with the X-T3. X-Trans II, X-Trans I and Bayer recipes are not. I appreciate your kind words!

No, not yet. You can browse them (both on this website and app), and there is a search feature on the website (top-right “hamburger” menu), but it searches the entire website, not just recipes. It’s something that I want to implement in the future. Sorry that I’m not more helpful.
Hey Ritchie – Loving the blog and App! Up until discovering your blog, I never really felt satisfied with my XT30. Now I’m loving it! I’ve gone with your advice and chosen different WB recipes for the 7 slots – was wondering if there is an easy way/guide on how to use the 3 custom white balance’s to maybe substitute one/some of the recipes that use common WBs? EG If I can get say Kodachrome 64 to use a custom WB with R2/B5 shift, that way I can still program Portra 160 with the R4/B5 Shift for Daylight. Any tips on Matching a custom WB to one of the static WB’s so I might be able to substitute? Thanks in Advance! Cheers

Alan shoots with a Leica and edits his RAW files, but a lot of his look is simply dramatic light. So the first place to start is not with a recipe, but with light. As for recipes, look at Acros Push Process, Kodak Tri-X 400, and Ilford HP5 Plus. Even the original Acros recipe might do the trick. I hope this helps!

I appreciate the suggestion. A search field would be great. There have been a couple of issues with implementing it (largely, it working offline), but I do hope to someday include it. As far as Favoriting, that’s already an option if you are a Patron, but it’s going to get a whole lot better very soon. Thank you for the input!

There are over 70 recipes on this website that are directly compatible with the X-T3. Look at the bottom-half of the X-Trans IV page (under X-T3/X-T30) and X-Trans III. Also, on the Fuji X Weekly App, if you are a Patron, you can Filter by camera, and see all of them there.

I stumbled upon a few retro-style pictures from Goodwood events and I was wondering if this grading could also be done with a recipe? Really flat contrast with only light shadows but still rich in color.

Given that the X-T3 has the same X-Trans IV sensor like the newer models, and assuming the same parameter settings, (disregarding Classic Negative), I am wondering why are there certain X Trans IV recipes like the Kodak Gold v2 not listed for the X-T3. Are they not compatible? Can you justify this?

It’s more than just Classic Negative. Clarity, Color Chrome FX Blue, and Grain size are all different, among other things. So for Kodak Gold v2 you could use a 1/8 Black Pro Mist or 5% CineBloom to replicate Clarity (since the X-T3 doesn’t have it). That recipe doesn’t call for CCEB, so you’re good there, but if it did that would be an issue. Then ignore Grain size, since that’s not an option on your camera. That will allow you to use it. So, with some modifications, sometimes these recipe can be used, but they’re not directly compatible. Even though it’s the same sensor and processor, it’s like two different generations of cameras.
Hi again, Ritchie. Do you have any tutorials (here or on youtube) on how to post on instagram without loosing image quality- I`ve searched, but I can`t seem to find any. Looking to start up an account, posting pictures using my brand new second hand low shutter count x-t30 and your brilliant recipes, but there are so many theories on how to keep image quality whilst posting, I`m kind of lost, going nuts, don`t know who to listen to anymore. Took a look at your account and your pictures looks amazing.. figure if you`re the mastermind behind these recipes, you can be trusted as well when it comes to how to keep said quality.
I don’t do anything special. IG doesn’t do a great job resizing, but not terrible, either. FB is terrible (not sure why the difference since it’s the same company…). It’s my understanding the IG resizes to 1080px width (bottom/top, not left/right), if this makes any sense. I’m sure your software of choice will allow you to resize to that, and will do a better job than IG. But I don’t bother with that, I just post it without doing anything special.
ps! I use lightroom mobile to resize and choose sRGB, image quality et cetera, et cetera
Thank you for answering. Also, I sold my newly bought second hand XT30, for less than I gave for it.. Tried to resist the urge, but some of these new recipes are jaw-dropping, left me in awe, so in the end I had to succumb; I sold it and bought a brand new XT30 II. All these reviewers saying the XT30 and XT30 II is basically the same camera, nearly rendering the mark II a useless upgrade, clearly hasn’t seen the results from your Xpro ’62, LomoChrome Metropolis, Kodak Portra 400, and so on and so on and so on recipes… For someone who used to love photography as a kid, even if just a novice/hobbyist level, back when we all used film, and can’t even stand the thought of processing pictures sitting in front of an computer; someone who can’t stand processing at all… what can I say.. you brought the joy back, you showed me magic is real.. *Can’t wait to start shooting. Thank you, man.
There’s a pretty significant difference between the two models for the JPEG photographer. It’s just too bad that Fujifilm didn’t update the original X-T30 to give you those things, and you had to purchase the new model. In any event, I’m certain you’ll love the new camera! In October 2021 I bought a brand new x100f over the V while in the USA ( had heard about some heating issues & did not want a touch screen ) as a street camera to fill the Gap between my Nikon & iPhone.
Heard about the recipes by you & well tried to feed them in but somehow I have failed at the process, I feel it changes my camera settings / does it alter the already fed-in Simulations within the Camera?
But my question is whatever changes I make to get a Recipe can be done by me on Lightroom on the Image correct so then why do I do it in Camera ???
also on the X100F, I am unable to name the Custom setting why ??
Lastly, this is for any other FujiX100 users & this is my personal view I bought it as a street shooter but somehow it felt too small & the Autofocus was just never up to the mark for me in real-life conditions BUT BUT recently I did some Boudoir shoots & surprisingly as strange as it may sound it’s Just perfect at least to me as a camera for Boudoir shoots don’t know why but it trumps my Nikon ( & as a digital shooter never shoot B&W always do that in the post ) but in this new ART form I use Acros all the time…hence wanted to learn how to use the recipes.
Thou in LR I do edit but they seem perfect and require very minimal or no edit on my JPEGS.

YES also played with a lot of 35mm film this year & varied ANALOG cameras and personally found the Fuji Superia 400 to be the best most spectacular in results over all the Kodak films I shot especially over the POTRA & ILFORD 400.
Lightroom (or any other RAW editor) will apply its version of its interpretation of some (but not all) of the JPEG data to the RAW. So it can get you a start, but you’ll still have to edit to try to make it “match” the straight-out-of-camera JPEG. The advantage of using the recipes is that you don’t need to edit your pictures if you don’t want to—they’re good to go the moment they’re captured.
I don’t know why Fujifilm doesn’t allow for custom naming C1-C7 presets on the X100F… I believe some X-Trans III cameras can, and all X-Trans IV can.
When you program a recipe into C1-C7, it “deletes” that built-in preset; however 1) these aren’t anything special (they are defaults with everything set to 0, Off, or Auto) and 2) they’re pretty easy to reset should you ever want to.

From the reports I have received, the X-Trans IV recipes for the X-Pro3 & newer models are fully compatible with, and render nearly identically on, the X-H2 and X-H2s; however, I have not used either camera to know for certain.

It’s my understanding from the reports I have received that the X-Trans IV recipes for the X-Pro3 and newer models are fully compatible and render nearly identically on the X-H2s, but I have no personal first-hand experience to say for certain. Do you feel the screen of x-e4 is quite different to the screen of an iPhone ? I find when the photos looks good in the x-e4 screen but when I transferred to iPhone it looks pale. Is there any settings of the screen we can modify to more close to an iPhone screen ?
Every monitor/screen is slightly different in rendering. I’ve never personally noticed a big difference between the X-E4 and iPhone (I’m on iPhone 11). This is how you adjust the X-E4 screen:

The landscape photos and recipes are great ! Do u suggest which recipes are good for shooting daily portraits that the color of skin look nice ?

A lot depends on the aesthetic you’re going for, what your definition of nice skin color is, the lighting situation, and the camera you have. I know that a number of people use the Kodak Portra recipes, even for professional portrait work. My personal recommendation is this recipe:

This is a great site and resources for film simulation recipes. Is there that much difference between the sensors that recipes aren’t translatable?
I have a GFX 50R and see that most of the X-Trans recipes can be loaded and saved as presets on the 50R with the exception of the Clarity, Color Chrome FX Blue options that are in the later X-Trans recipes. With any recipe with a half step increments I just round to the nearest whole increment which gets me mostly in the area.
X-T3/X-T30 recipes are fully compatible, technically, with the GFX 50R. Color rendition is slightly different, but it’s very subtle and not a big deal whatsoever. Shadow rendering is the biggest difference, as shadows are lighter on the GFX camera. Adding +1 Shadow is too much. A +0.5 adjustment would probably be close, but the GFX 50R doesn’t have that. However, it’s about finding what works best for you, and not whether something is precise or not. If you’ve modified (“seasoned to taste”) a recipe to make it work for you, that’s great!

I really appreciate your work, and I have to correct you in the Bayer sensor segment, you included the first-gen x100 which actually has an EXR sensor
speaking of EXR I’d like to see if any of these recipes work with EXR cameras like the x100, and x10…etc
I am buying an x10 tomorrow though I did not find any film sims for it online 🙁

You are right, the original X100 is EXR and not Bayer. Fujifilm abandoned EXR with the introduction of X-Trans. The X100 and X10 are older models, and not too many are still using them (according to a survey that I conducted last year). I would look at X-Trans I and Bayer recipes… those that use Provia, Velvia, and Astia should be “technically” compatible, but you’ll have to see if you like the rendering, which is likely slightly different.

No, not really. You can try X-Trans I recipes, there should be some level of cross-compatibility, but likely a slight variance in rendering.
I am purchasing XT100 for just film simulations but after reading up I am under the impression that simulations are very much restricted on that model. How much difference can it make when purchasing only for the simulations?
The X-T100 has fewer options and fewer recipes. It’s a good camera, but more limited when compared to other Fujifilm models. I would recommend an X-T30 II or X-E4 if you can afford it, or if you cannot, the X-T30, X-T20, and X-E3 are other models to consider.

Again, outstanding work you’re doing. Any chance you would want to look into a Panatomic-X film simulation… I use an XT-4 and X-T5. Just checking.
That would be interesting. Super fine grain. It wasn’t necessarily a contrasty film, but it had a very small dynamic range (for B&W negative film), if I remember correctly. I appreciate the suggestion!

You outdid yourself with this Emulsion ’86 recipe… outstanding!!.. It’s in my X-T5 and it’s staying there until something better comes along… I thought Kodachrome 64 was the thing, and it’s great but this one is awesome. Thank you very much.
