I’ve been secretly working on a little side camera project. It’s just for fun—nothing too serious—but I’ve enjoyed it a lot so far. What is it? The answer might surprise you.
Let me introduce you to Classic DigiCam, a celebration of the nostalgia of retro digital photography. Specifically, it’s about old digital pocket point-and-shoot cameras, especially those from about 2006 through 2012 when those models were particularly popular.
These cameras are really trendy right now. I’ve had one for several years (before they were once again popular), but recently I rediscovered the joy of DigiCam photography. Actually, it’s fun for the whole family, as we all get to use them when we travel somewhere, including all four of my kids. It’s a great way to include everyone.

I have a bunch of them. I like old tech. The main problem with some of the old cameras is finding spare batteries.
In December I gave away a Nikon 1 J4 to the owners of a guest house in Albania. In February I gave away a Fuji XQ1 and Samsung EX1. Not just any random people, though. These people have an interest in photography but can’t afford to buy a camera, or it’s not the highest priority. They were absolutely surprised and delighted. No one has ever done it before me. I also bring other stuff to give away when I go on holidays, and on the way back I fill my bag with food stuffs. Just spent my third February in Mexico, brought home 5 kilos of various dried chillies!
Still have and still use most of these:
– Sony Cyber-shot DSC-F707. (no spare batteries. Small capacity memory sticks)
– FujiFilm FinePix S5100 Zoom (FinePix S5500). (LCD the size of a stamp. Hilarious.)
– Nikon Coolpix S10. (I am taken with the swivel lens design)
– Fujifilm X-S1. (I like this one)
– Fujifilm X100S/X20/X30
Recently bought an Olympus Tough TG-6 for whale watching and snorkeling. Looks like they will never release another TG camera.
The following died on me:
– Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5. (I like this flat design)
– Canon PowerShot G3X. (Worthless POS! Died on my during whale watching.)
– Fujifilm FinePix F31fd.
– Sony Cyber-shot DSC-F88 (swivel lens)
– FujiFilm FinePix 3800. (My very first Fujifilm, bought in 2003! Gave it to a distant relative when I got its successor the following year.)
My favourite old digicam is actually a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-F88. Small camera with swivel lens you can operate with one hand. The next camera I’m giving away is Leica D-LUX 5. Not sure to whom but for sure not some random person.
Camera shops have heard about the old cam trend, I see. They want to give me $140 for my X100S and I see they are selling one for $670. Haha… I shall hold on to my old cameras till the bitter end.
Definitely don’t sell the X100S for $140! I’m sure you can get $600 or more on eBay for it.
