52 Weeks of Photography: Week 18

Southwind – Litchfield Park, AZ – Fujifilm X-T4 & 90mm f/2 – Kodak Portra do Sol

Week 17

This is a one-year photo-a-day project called 52 Weeks of Photography. Even though it is a year-long undertaking, I’m taking it one week at a time, because it’s a little easier to manage many small blocks than one large chunk. This is the 18th week, so the 18th set of seven images.

The reason why I’m doing this 365 Day project is because I noticed some gaps in-between my images last year. I didn’t pick up my cameras daily. On several occasions, four or five days passed by without a single picture created. Twice in 2024, I skipped a whole week. I want to rectify this, and get back into the habit of daily photography. I also want to elevate the quality of my craft in 2025, and am hoping that this will help.

Tree in Transition – Surprise, AZ – Fujifilm X-E4 & 27mm f/2.8 – Pacific Blues

The plan is to capture a year’s worth of notable images, either personally or artistically. Ansel Adams famously stated, “Twelve significant photographs in any one year is a good crop.” It’s important to keep expectations realistic, but I’m also trying to avoid thoughtless snapshots just to fulfill the day’s requirement. I want to push myself to be better, and hopefully that will happen. Not every photo will be great—in fact, most won’t—but I hope they are all at least decent enough to be shared without embarrassment. And maybe when the whole project is complete, there will be 12 significant pictures (out of the 365) that I’m particularly proud of.

There were a couple of days where I only created a few photos during this week; otherwise, it was quite productive. While I doubt any from this set will be considered significant when this project is finished, there are a couple of pictures that I’m personally quite happy with. There were also a couple of “tough cuts” that I’ll have to find a way to share elsewhere.

Without further ado, below are the 18th set of seven pictures from this 52 Weeks of Photography project.

Desert Bloom – Buckeye, AZ – Fujifilm GFX100S II & 80mm f/1.7 – Fujicolor PRO 160C Warm

Week 16

I made a mistake in the Week 16 update. The photo listed as “Wednesday, April 9th, 2025” was actually captured on Thursday, April 10th. And the photo purportedly captured on April 10th was actually made on the 11th. And so on. Each photo is off by one day, except for the first, which really was photographed on Tuesday, April 8th. That’s the only one that is correct. I’m sorry for getting that wrong.

The photo that should have been listed as Wednesday, April 9th, is below. It’s the only picture that I made on that day, and I failed to upload it, which is why I overlooked it. I noticed the discrepancy yesterday when I was preparing this article. In order to get back on track, I’ve changed the formatting just a little—I hope you don’t mind.

Shadow Abstract – Buckeye, AZ – Fujifilm X-T5 & 56mm f/1.2 – Kodak Tri-X 400

The reason why I’m doing this 365 Day project is because I noticed some gaps in-between my images last year. I didn’t pick up my cameras daily. On several occasions, four or five days passed by without a single picture created. Twice in 2024, I skipped a whole week. I want to rectify this, and get back into the habit of daily photography. Most days are easy, but some are not. I’ve managed at least a small handful of photographs on most days, but on a few occasions (like April 9th above), it’s been only one picture.

Without further ado, below are the 17th set of pictures from this 52 Weeks of Photography project.

Rainbow Over Trees – Surprise, AZ – Fujifilm X-E4 & 27mm f/2.8 – Pacific Blues

Week 14

This is a one-year photo-a-day project called 52 Weeks of Photography. Even though it is a year-long undertaking, I’m taking it one week at a time, because it’s a little easier to manage many small blocks than one large chunk. This is the 15th week, so the 15th set of seven images.

Had a great week. Co-lead a photowalk on the 4th, and attended a portrait lighting class on the 5th. Was fairly productive on several other days, too. There are probably a dozen pictures that might have made the cut to be shared in the weekly article if they had occurred in a different week (mostly captured over a four day stretch). Hopefully I can keep this up as the temperatures get hot here in Arizona.

Without further ado, below are the 15th set of seven pictures from this 52 Weeks of Photography project.

52 Weeks of Photography: Week 14

Summer Feelings – Buckeye, AZ – Fujifilm X-T4 & 90mm f/2 – Vintage Color

Week 13

This is a one-year photo-a-day project called 52 Weeks of Photography. Even though it is a year-long undertaking, I’m taking it one week at a time, because it’s a little easier to manage many small blocks than one large chunk. This is the 14th week, so the 14th set of seven images.

On The Go – Charleston, SC – Fujifilm X-E4 & 27mm f/2.8 – Kodak Tri-X 400

While the previous week was easy for this project, this week was difficult. It started out with some serious jet-lag. Then some of us got sick. Then my family participated in a 72 hour film challenge. All four of my kids are in a creative arts club, which hosts an annual film challenge. The kids form teams, which could be with their peers (which is what my two oldest did last year) or with their family (what they decided on this year… although the two girls were also on another team). So we had 72 hours to write, record, edit, and submit a five minute short film. Then we had an additional 24 hours to make a trailer and poster. All of the films will play in a local movie theater later this month, and sometime after that I’ll share our video in a post, for anyone who might be interested. Making this short film was in addition to all the “normal” things that go on day-to-day, so finding time for photography was difficult on a few of the days.

This is the 13th week, so the 13th set of seven images, which means that I’m 25% finished. Wow, time flies!

The reason why I’m doing this 365 Day project is because I noticed some gaps in-between my images last year. I didn’t pick up my cameras daily. And maybe when the whole project is complete, there will be 12 significant pictures (out of the 365) that I’m particularly proud of.

Because it was my kids’ spring break, I spent the majority of this week in Charleston, South Carolina, which is an incredible city! I had no idea. It wasn’t on my radar, but I’m so glad that we visited. I’ll probably publish a series of articles that better details the trip, for those who might be interested. Anyway, when you travel, photographing every day is easy, so I had no problems completing this week’s assignment.

Another week is in the books. I like several of the photographs that I created during this week (although none are likely to make any sort of portfolio), but—overall—there are a lot of mediocre images. I’m working on a big project that I’m trying to wrap up, and in order to get over the finish line, I seemed to have I chosen quantity over quality on some days. I’m really hoping to be done with that project by the end of the week, so stay tuned—I’m excited to share it with you!

A lot of personal things came up this week. There were a couple of time that I thought I was going to fail. Somehow I managed to photograph each day, and I think it is because of the habits formed during the first nine weeks—if the same obstacles had presented themselves earlier in the project, I’m confident that I wouldn’t have completed it. Because those habits had cemented themselves already, it helped tremendously. Life happens, so I built into this project two days that can be missed. At some point I know that I’ll need to use those, but I’d rather save them for later if possible, and thankfully it was possible.

This is a one-year photo-a-day project called 52 Weeks of Photography. Even though it is a year-long undertaking, I’m taking it one week at a time, because it’s a little easier to manage many small blocks than one large chunk. This is the eighth week, so the eighth set of seven images.

The reason why I’m doing this 365 Day project is because I noticed some gaps in-between my images last year. I didn’t pick up my cameras daily. Not every photo will be great—in fact, most won’t—but I hope they are all at least decent enough to be shared without embarrassment.

I wasn’t especially productive or unproductive this week. There are a handful of photographs that I really like, and a fair number of mediocre ones. I do feel that grabbing a camera and making pictures daily is becoming more natural—I believe the habit is setting in; however, I do need to press myself to be more creative on some days.

52 Weeks of Photography: Week 6

Palms in the Clouds – Buckeye, AZ – Fujifilm GFX100S II & 80mm f/1.7 – Kodak Tri-X 400

Week 5

This is a one-year photo-a-day project called 52 Weeks of Photography. Even though it is a year-long undertaking, I’m taking it one week at a time, because it’s a little easier to manage many small blocks than one large chunk. This is the sixth week, so the sixth set of seven images.

I also want to elevate the quality of my craft in 2025, and am hoping this will help with that.

Desert Saguaro – Surprise, AZ – Fujifilm X100VI – Upcoming Recipe

The plan is to capture a year’s worth of notable images, either personally or artistically. Ansel Adams famously stated, “Twelve significant photographs in any one year is a good crop.” It’s important to keep expectations realistic, but I’m also trying to avoid thoughtless snapshots just to fulfill the day’s requirement. I want to push myself to be better, and hopefully that will happen. Not every photo will be great—in fact, most won’t—but I hope they are all at least decent enough to be shared without embarrassment.

Looking back on this week’s photographs, I was surprised that the vast majority were fairly pedestrian. I thought I had had a productive week—in fact, I did have a productive week; however, just not artistically. If I’m going to accomplish my goal of improving my craft in 2025, quantity isn’t going to be sufficient. I need to think more about quality whenever I have a camera in my hands.

Below are the sixth set of seven pictures from this 52 Weeks of Photography project.

Week 4

This is a one-year photo-a-day project called 52 Weeks of Photography. Even though it is a year-long undertaking, I’m taking it one week at a time, because it’s a little easier to manage many small blocks than one large chunk. This is the fifth week, so the fifth set of seven images.

I also want to elevate the quality of my craft in 2025, and am hoping this will help with that.

Toilet Trash – Buckeye, AZ – Fujifilm X-T4 ES & 35mm f/2 – Upcoming Recipe

The plan is to capture a year’s worth of notable images, either personally or artistically. Ansel Adams famously stated, “Twelve significant photographs in any one year is a good crop.” It’s important to keep expectations realistic, but I’m also trying to avoid thoughtless snapshots just to fulfill the day’s requirement. I want to push myself to be better, and hopefully that will happen. Not every photo will be great—in fact, most won’t—but I hope they are all at least decent enough to be shared without embarrassment.

I had three especially productive days this week, and four not-so-productive ones. On two of the days, I barely met the minimum obligation, and nearly chalked them up as losses; however, I decided that there was one photo on each day that was just good enough to share, so by the skin-of-my-teeth I made it. I have built into this project two days that I can miss, just knowing that life happens, and it would have been a shame to have used both of them on week five, especially since I didn’t have a good excuse. Thankfully, I didn’t have to, but I do need to be a bit more careful and purposeful moving forward.

Below are the fifth set of seven pictures from this 52 Weeks of Photography project.

New Year, New Project: 52 Weeks of Photography — Part 1, Introduction & 1st Week

Young Yucca – White Sands NP, NM – Fujifilm GFX100S II + 80mm f/1.7 – Fujicolor PRO 160C Warm

It’s officially 2025! Happy New Year’s Day, everyone!

I started a new 365 Day photo project, which I’m calling 52 Weeks of Photography, back on Christmas Eve. This article is simply the introduction of the project, and the first set of seven images. I’m pretty excited to do this, and hope you appreciate following along on this journey.

This isn’t the first time that I’ve done a 365 Day photo project—I did one from August 2018 through August 2019. I developed the habit of picking up a camera daily, and my photography improved from start to finish. Also, I captured some photographs that I wouldn’t have otherwise, a few of which I was quite happy with. There is definitely a benefit to doing this type of thing. Professional athletes and musicians practice daily, so why shouldn’t photographers?

The reason why I’m doing this now is because I noticed gaps in-between my images. I haven’t been picking up my cameras daily. On several occasions, four or five days have gone by without a single picture created. Twice in 2024, a whole week passed. I want to rectify this, and get back into the habit of daily photography. I also want to elevate the quality of my craft in 2025, and am hoping this will help with that.

Full Service – Idalou, TX – Fujifilm X-T5 + 56mm f/1.2 – Superia Negative

I’ve set some ground rules for myself. I’m taking things one week at a time. That’s a little easier mentally than looking at it as one whole year chunk. If I mess up on a week, I’ll simply extend the project by a week; however, I’m also giving myself two grace days. I’d actually like to finish this on Christmas Day, which is 367 days from the start. If I miss two days, that’s perfectly ok. If I miss three to seven days, this project will be extended by one week. I think it’s good to build-in some breathing room, because life happens.

My hope is to capture a year’s worth of notable images, either personally or artistically.

FREE Photowalks in Texas and New York City!!

Fujifilm X-T50 + Fujinon 27mm f/2.8 + Pushed Analog Recipe

This is going to be a busy fall! I have a lot of upcoming things in the works, and I cannot wait to share them all with you. Hopefully within the next couple of weeks I can announce everything. As soon as I can, I’ll be sure to post about it on Fuji X Weekly.

There are two very exciting events that are just around the corner. Both are don’t-miss opportunities for you. If you live in Texas, I hope to see you at Fujifilm’s Create With Us next week in Austin. If you live anywhere near New York City, be sure to come to the NAB Show in October. Both will be epic! You need to be registered, so be sure to sign up ASAP, because space is limited.

Fujifilm Create With Us in Austin — September 28th

Join me in Austin, Texas, on September 28th—that’s next week! I will be co-leading two photowalks with Fred Agho, one at 1:30 PM and the other at 4:30 PM, as a part of Fujifilm’s Create With Us event. If you live in Austin—or are within driving distance of Austin—this is an event that you won’t want to miss!

This will be an epic day of learning, creating, networking, and more! You must be registered to attend. Space is limited, so don’t procrastinate—sign up today! I believe that the photowalks have been fully booked, but you can be placed on a backup list in case someone doesn’t show. I hope to see you in Austin next week!

NAB Show NYC — October 9th & 10th

Fujifilm X-T50 + Fujinon 27mm f/2.8 + Superia Negative Recipe

I will be at the NAB Show in New York City on October 9th and 10th, leading three free photowalks. These photowalks will be small groups, meaning that there will be tons of opportunity for one-on-one conversations. This is a teaching opportunity—I’m there to help you—so bring whatever questions you might have, and I’ll make it as informative and educational as I can. The photowalks will take place in the vicinity of the Jacob Javits Convention Center in Midtown West Manhattan.

Fujifilm will be offering “an immersive journey into the world of photography and videography.” As a part of this, there will be 24 photowalks hosted by a variety of extraordinarily talented creators. Seriously, I would love to attend all of these photowalks myself—this is a don’t-miss opportunity!

I will be leading three photowalks: October 9th at 11:15 AM, October 9th at 2:45 PM, and October 10th at 11:45 AM (note: these were pushed out 45 minutes from their original times). The theme of my photowalks are Straight Out of Camera—we’re going to “put the legendary Fujifilm colors to the test and learn to craft polished images in-camera to streamline your process.” Basically, we’re going to use various Film Simulation Recipes to photograph New York City. Bring your favorite Fujifilm camera; also, this will be an opportunity to get hands-on with some of the latest X-series gear, so bring a spare SD card.

The themes of the other photowalks are Video VisualsCamera-to-CloudFilm SimulationsCouples PortraitureStreet Photography, and Social Reels. These photowalks are free; however, you must preregister for the photowalk that you want to attend, and also be registered for NAB. Those of you who live in the NYC area will want to come for certain. Spaces are very limited, so don’t procrastinate—sign up today!

Weekly Photo Project – Conclusion

With my 365 photo-a-day project complete, I wanted to share some thoughts about it. Was it worth it? What did I learn? Would I do it again? I’m sure there are a number of you who have considered doing your own, so perhaps answering these questions will be useful insight to you.

One reason why I wanted to do this project in the first place was for practice. In the very first post I said, “Athletes practice daily. Musicians practice daily. If you want to be great at something and stay great at it, you need to regularly challenge yourself. This is just as true with your camera as it is with everything else.” A 365 project is one way to photographically exercise. It keeps you in camera shape and hopefully builds camera muscle. With each exposure there is an opportunity to learn. I do believe that I did improve my photography skills over the last year, at least a little.

If you do something everyday for long enough it will become habit. Picking up my camera and having it with me is now habit. Thinking photographically while I have my camera nearby is a habit. Capturing daily pictures is a habit. More importantly than all of that, taking note of the exposures I made and whether or not they’re good enough, and, if not, trying again a little harder to capture something better is now a habit. Those are good habits that I can thank this project for.

Something else that I gained from doing this photo-a-day project is I captured some pictures that I would not have otherwise captured. I forced myself to make some exposures “because I had to” and some of those pictures I quite like. I wouldn’t have made them if I wasn’t forcing myself to do so. This project increased my productivity.

My advice for someone who wants to do a project like this is, first of all, to do it. Actually decide to start and follow through. I took things one week at a time (which is why I called it “Weekly Photo Project”), so if I happened to fail at one week I wouldn’t feel like I failed the whole project. It’s easier to say, “I have just three days left” than “I have 147 days to go!” Taking things in small chunks was mentally very helpful. My advice would be to schedule breaks, perhaps once a quarter or maybe at the mid-point, to allow yourself the opportunity to guilt-free miss a day or week. I found that the winter, with its cold and short days, was the hardest. The second half of the project was much easier than the first because habits were setting in.

I’m not continuing this project because I have other things that I want to devote my time and energy towards. I will still be photographically exercising because I want to continue to build my camera skills, but it will be different exercises, such as the Film Simulation Challenge. It was great to do, and I’m very happy that I completed this project, as it was very beneficial to me, but I’m glad that it’s now over.

I’ve selected one picture to represent each week for the second half of this project. I did this already for Weeks 1-26. Some weeks I had several good pictures to choose from, and some weeks I had seven mediocre ones. That’s just the way it goes. I hope you’ve enjoyed following this project, and I hope that it has been an inspiration to you.

Weekly Photo Project, Week 50

This week is represented by a hodgepodge of pictures. Overall these seven days were fairly productive, with the usual couple of barely-productive days thrown in. You might note that there are only two weeks left, which I’ve actually already completed, so in real time this project is finished, but I still have more to share on this blog. Expect those posts shortly, with a wrap-up article to nicely tie a bow around this whole thing.

The first four photographs in this set are ones that I haven’t posted on Fuji X Weekly before. Sunrise Over Lincoln Highway is a great example of how D-Range Priority can be a useful feature occasionally. In this case D-Range Priority Strong was selected in order to combat the extreme contrast of the scene.

Week 48  Week 50

Weekly Photo Project, Week 48

Unsurprisingly, this week had a few photographically productive days and a few that weren’t. That’s been a common theme of this project, and if there’s one thing that I’d like to further work on regarding all this is ensuring that each day is productive. That’s not an easy task because life pulls in so many different directions all at once. I think finding and taking advantage of the small moments tucked among all of the distractions and responsibilities is an opportunity to succeed at this, but it will take being more diligent and deliberate.

Week 47   Week 49

Weekly Photo Project, Week 47

As you can see, I’m pretty far behind getting these Weekly Photo Project posts out. I’m actually nearing completion of the project, as I have five more weeks after the one that these pictures represent. Two of those weeks have already happened, and the third will be finished tomorrow. That means, in reality, there are only two weeks left, which is just really difficult for me to imagine, yet I’m quite anxious for this to be done. The first two pictures below are textured pictures using the double-exposure feature of my Fujifilm X-T30. I included the third picture in my Diversity of Utah Landscapes article, so you’ve probably seen it before. The final four pictures are ones that I’ve yet to share.

Week 46  Week 48

Weekly Photo Project, Week 46

If this week had a theme it would be red, as I used my Redscale film simulation recipe extensively. The last day is the only one that’s not Redscale, which is the only picture in this series that hasn’t already been shared on this blog.

I’m really looking forward to this photo-a-day project to reach its conclusion. It’s pretty close to being finished, as I’m on the home stretch. Six weeks to go, but really a week-and-a-half of that has already happened, I just haven’t posted the pictures yet, so in about a month I’ll be all done. It’s been a great experience, but I have other projects that I’ve placed on hold because of it, and I look forward to pursuing those.

Week 45  Week 47

Weekly Photo Project, Week 45

In this week you’ll see examples of four of my recent film simulation recipes: Fujicolor Industrial, Faded Color, Faded Monochrome and Redscale. As you can imagine, it was a very productive week for film simulation creation. A few of the days were particularly photographically productive, too. Perhaps more importantly, I had a number of fun adventures. Even though you’ve seen these pictures before, I hope that you will still find this set enjoyable.
