Weekly Photo Project – Conclusion

With my 365 photo-a-day project complete, I wanted to share some thoughts about it. Was it worth it? What did I learn? Would I do it again? I’m sure there are a number of you who have considered doing your own, so perhaps answering these questions will be useful insight to you.

One reason why I wanted to do this project in the first place was for practice. In the very first post I said, “Athletes practice daily. Musicians practice daily. If you want to be great at something and stay great at it, you need to regularly challenge yourself. This is just as true with your camera as it is with everything else.” A 365 project is one way to photographically exercise. It keeps you in camera shape and hopefully builds camera muscle. With each exposure there is an opportunity to learn. I do believe that I did improve my photography skills over the last year, at least a little.

If you do something everyday for long enough it will become habit. Picking up my camera and having it with me is now habit. Thinking photographically while I have my camera nearby is a habit. Capturing daily pictures is a habit. More importantly than all of that, taking note of the exposures I made and whether or not they’re good enough, and, if not, trying again a little harder to capture something better is now a habit. Those are good habits that I can thank this project for.

Something else that I gained from doing this photo-a-day project is I captured some pictures that I would not have otherwise captured. I forced myself to make some exposures “because I had to” and some of those pictures I quite like. I wouldn’t have made them if I wasn’t forcing myself to do so. This project increased my productivity.

My advice for someone who wants to do a project like this is, first of all, to do it. Actually decide to start and follow through. I took things one week at a time (which is why I called it “Weekly Photo Project”), so if I happened to fail at one week I wouldn’t feel like I failed the whole project. It’s easier to say, “I have just three days left” than “I have 147 days to go!” Taking things in small chunks was mentally very helpful. My advice would be to schedule breaks, perhaps once a quarter or maybe at the mid-point, to allow yourself the opportunity to guilt-free miss a day or week. I found that the winter, with its cold and short days, was the hardest. The second half of the project was much easier than the first because habits were setting in.

I’m not continuing this project because I have other things that I want to devote my time and energy towards. I will still be photographically exercising because I want to continue to build my camera skills, but it will be different exercises, such as the Film Simulation Challenge. It was great to do, and I’m very happy that I completed this project, as it was very beneficial to me, but I’m glad that it’s now over.

I’ve selected one picture to represent each week for the second half of this project. I did this already for Weeks 1-26. Some weeks I had several good pictures to choose from, and some weeks I had seven mediocre ones. That’s just the way it goes. I hope you’ve enjoyed following this project, and I hope that it has been an inspiration to you.

Here it is! These pictures are the final week of this photo-a-day project, taken one week at a time for 52 weeks. It’s very hard for me to believe that it’s over, but it is also a relief, and now I can tackle some other things that I’ve been putting off. There will be one more post, which will summarize the entire project. I hope that you’ve enjoyed seeing these articles and that this has been an inspiration to you in some way.

Week 51  Conclusion

Weekly Photo Project, Week 51

I love using vintage lenses. They add character to the image. Modern lenses are great, but they are also precision engineered, which means that they lack flaws. It’s flaws that give these old lenses personality. Each picture this week was captured with an old, manual lens attached to the front of my Fujifilm X-T30.

Weekly Photo Project, Week 50

This week is represented by a hodgepodge of pictures. Overall these seven days were fairly productive, with the usual couple of barely-productive days thrown in. You might note that there are only two weeks left, which I’ve actually already completed, so in real time this project is finished, but I still have more to share on this blog. Expect those posts shortly, with a wrap-up article to nicely tie a bow around this whole thing.

The first four photographs in this set are ones that I haven’t posted on Fuji X Weekly before. The bottom three pictures were in the Kodacolor film simulation recipe article, so you’ve probably seen them before, but I hope that you don’t mind seeing them again. Sunrise Over Lincoln Highway is a great example of how D-Range Priority can be a useful feature occasionally. In this case D-Range Priority Strong was selected in order to combat the extreme contrast of the scene.

I’m officially three-fourths done with this photo-a-day project. Yea! It’s very difficult to believe that in only 13 more weeks I will have completed a year of daily pictures. It’s been a good experience with ups and downs, but mostly ups. I do look forward to seeing this project’s completion, as I have some other tasks that I’m anxious to start. I’m holding off on those other personal projects until this one is complete, or else I might not make it to week 52.

Last week’s theme was black-and-white, and this week continues that theme. One thing you might notice is that my new Fujifilm X-T30 has begun to appear. It’s been a blast to use, as I’ve been trying out the new features. I’m sure you’ll see a lot about this camera on this blog over the coming weeks. I will try to not make it “all X-T30 all the time” so that there’s something for everyone.

As has been the usual since pretty much the beginning of this project, I had a couple of photographically productive days and a couple of days where I barely squeaked by. I look forward to the photographic opportunities that await me in the spring.

Weekly Photo Project, Week 30

This week had a few days that were a real struggle to capture even one image. The real hero was the Fujifilm XF10, which was used for five out of the seven pictures below. Without that camera, this week would have been a failure. Because it is small and lightweight, it’s easy to carry around with me. Sometimes having a camera–any camera–is much more important than what the gear is.

This week wasn’t quite as productive as the previous week, but it was still overall a decent week of photography for me. I didn’t create any spectacular pictures, and for the most part these images will be quickly forgotten. Five of the seven pictures are of snowy mountains, which are seen from my backyard. That’s a great aspect of living in Utah. There are wonderful views all around, and I feel fortunate that I can frequently photograph the local beauty.

Week 27  Week 29

Weekly Photo Project, Week 27

After a short intermission, I’m back on track with my photo-a-day challenge, where I’m trying to capture at least one picture each day for a year, taking things one week at a time. I’ve shifted my week slightly, going Sunday through Saturday instead of Monday through Sunday. In 2018, starting out on Monday made sense with the flow of my week, but things have changed slightly this year, and so starting out on Sunday works well with how things are now.

You might notice that I have two different themes this week: monochrome and location. All of these pictures are black-and-white and they were all captured at or very near my home. You don’t have to go far to find interesting things to photograph. Sometimes you don’t even need to leave your home. Look for what’s right around you, wherever you happen to be. I chose monochrome simply because I had captured a number of black-and-white pictures this week, and decided to keep things consistent. I hope you enjoy!

Week 26  Week 28

Weekly Photo Project, Week 26

I made it to the halfway point without missing a single day! That’s a big accomplishment, but I feel exhausted by this project. It has taken its toll at times. There are days when it takes a lot of mental effort to capture even one image. One thing that I wish I’d done different, and it’s what I would recommend for those who want to undertake a photo-a-day project, is to schedule breaks periodically. I wish that, say, once per quarter I had a week scheduled off. It’s not that I wouldn’t do any photography during that week, but only I wouldn’t have to do photography during that week if I didn’t want to. Still, it feels great to reach the midpoint, and it seems worthy of celebration.

Week 25 Week 27

Weekly Photo Project, Week 22

There’s an advantage and disadvantage to doing a photo-a-day project like this. The disadvantage is that it can be difficult and exhausting. There were a couple of days during this week that I wanted to stop. I had so much going on with the holiday season, and the weather is cold and the daylight is short, so making time for photography seemed unnecessary. It’s easy to make excuses, but it’s important to not allow them to stop us from achieving our goals. The advantage to doing a 365 project is that, because I forced myself to capture some images when I didn’t want to, I was able to create some pictures that I probably wouldn’t have otherwise. I can clearly see the benefit as I look back at the pictures I’ve captured over the last five months. The advantage significantly outweighs the disadvantage, and so I persevere, still on track going into the new year.

Weekly Photo Project, Week 21

My weekly photo project is an attempt to capture one picture every day for a year, taking things one week at a time. I’m 21 weeks into it now, and perhaps you have not been following this project from the beginning. If you’d like to take a look back, here’s a link to Week 1, and from there you can see each week from the start. You could also browse through it backwards using the link at the bottom of this article. I hope that you enjoy the pictures!

Week 20  Week 22

Weekly Photo Project, Week 20

I had a couple days of productive photography during this week. Because of my busy holiday schedule, the sometimes less-than-ideal weather conditions, and fewer daylight hours, there were some days where I almost didn’t capture a single picture. Luckily I did manage to take at least two images each day, which is great! Twenty straight weeks capturing at least one photo each day is certainly an accomplishment, one that I wasn’t sure I’d pull off. Now if I can string 32 more weeks together I’ll have successfully finished a 365 project. I want to challenge myself moving forward to improving the quality of the pictures. I feel as though on certain days all I’ve done is made a quick snapshot in order to have a picture. I want to make sure that I’ve created a quality image on each day, which is a challenge within a challenge, I suppose.

Week 19  Week 21

Weekly Photo Project, Week 19

I don’t feel as though this week was particularly photographically productive, but I did manage to capture at least one photograph every day. I also managed to create a few pictures that are decent. The end of this week marks 133 straight days with at least one image captured, which is a pretty darn good accomplishment. Hopefully I can keep this going through the winter, which I anticipate being the most difficult season for this project. Even if each photograph isn’t amazing and only one each week is good, that still means I have 52 good pictures over the course of a year. I still have a long ways to go, and it’s best not to count chickens before they hatch, so I better keep moving forward one day at a time.

Weekly Photo Project, Week 18

During this week I used my wife’s Fujifilm X-T20 quite a bit. I promised her that I wouldn’t take it over, but I’ve enjoyed using it so much that I kind of did take it over. Well, I asked nicely if I could use it each time, and I’ve also shared my cameras with her (or, at least made the offer to). I think when the X-T30 comes out, which might be sometime next year, it will be very tempting to pick one up.

Weekly Photo Project, Week 17

I’m continuing last week’s theme of alternating between color and black-and-white. Monday and Saturday were the only two days that I didn’t capture a whole lot, and the pickings were slim. Otherwise I had at least a handful of photographs to choose from for each day. Amazingly enough, I’m about 1/3 of the way through this 52 week project, which is hard to believe because it seems like I just started. I’m anticipating that winter will be the most difficult season, but I’m staying hopeful that I can complete it without missing a single day.

Week 16  Week 18

Weekly Photo Project, Week 16

You might notice that I alternated color and black-and-white photographs this week, which I did just for fun. Every day except for Monday I had both color and monochrome images to choose from, so it was easy. Alternatively, I could have made this an all-color week. If a theme presents itself I might try to do that on some weeks just to spice up this series a little.

You might notice that five of the seven pictures were captured at my house. It’s nice when you can travel someplace to do photography, but sometimes that’s just not practical. If you have a camera and a creative mind, it’s possible to create interesting images right where you’re at, wherever that is. It might seem like you’re in a boring location without photographic potential, but try hard enough and you’ll soon spot things worthy of pointing your camera lens towards.
