Weekly Photo Project, Week 15

Wow! It’s hard to believe that I’m already 15 weeks into this photo-a-day project. Daylight Savings ended and the clocks were set back one hour, and it almost derailed this series. Thankfully I had a camera with me and I was able to snap an image out the car window while driving down the highway just before the last light of day disappeared.

Weekly Photo Project, Week 14

The interesting thing about where I live is that I have a front-row seat to the progression of autumn. I can see the colors turn first at the top of the mountain, which is clearly visible out the back door, and move down the hill over the following weeks. As the leaves begin to disappear off of the trees on the mountain, they start to turn from green to yellow, orange and red down in the valley, which is where I live. The fall colors have mostly disappeared off of the mountain, but they’re still vibrant in the foothills, although the trees have thinned out considerably. There’s probably one more week of autumn trees. Soon the landscape will be somewhat stark and barren, with the chill of winter quickly coming.

Weekly Photo Project, Week 13

This week wouldn’t have been successful without the Fujifilm XF10. There were three days that likely would have been passed up without an image if I hadn’t had the little camera in my pocket. For me, the XF10 is an essential tool for this project. This week, which was one of the more difficult weeks for this series, features seven photographs that were captured with the Fujifilm XF10.

Weekly Photo Project, Week 12

I used a variety of cameras during this week. You’ll notice that the Fujifilm X-T20 shows up for the first time. That’s my wife’s camera, and it was more convenient to use in that one instance. I haven’t touched it much at all, but in the little that I have handled the X-T20 it seems like a nice, well thought-out camera. The 50-230mm lens that was used for two of these images is also my wife’s, as she was gracious enough to let me borrow it. It’s alright for a cheap zoom, definitely not the sharpest I’ve handled but very lightweight.

Weekly Photo Project, Week 11

There were two days during this week where I captured many great photographs, specifically Tuesday and Wednesday. I traveled to Heber Valley and into the Wasatch Mountains and made a bunch of exposures that I’m especially happy with. I’ll have to share those pictures with you in an upcoming article. The pickings were slim on all the other days, but I did manage to capture at least one photograph daily, which is the goal of this project.

It’s hard to believe that I’m sharing Week 10 of this project already. It’s seems like I just started! While there have been days where I really had to try hard to capture even one or two exposures (such as September 29), for the most part things have become easier. Routine has set in a little. It is what I do now. The Fujifilm XF10 has certainly helped. On most days I’m able to make a number of pictures, perhaps a handful or two. Hopefully as the days become shorter and colder I’ll still be able to keep this up.

Weekly Photo Project, Week 9

Nine weeks down, just 43 to go! Each week seems to have a couple of days where I capture a bunch of pictures, a couple of days of barely any pictures, and two or three days where I capture a handful of images. Those days where I’m lucky to have one or two photographs are the hard ones, but, thanks to this project, I’m forcing myself to take a moment to use my camera even when my busy day doesn’t seem to allow. Athletes and musicians practice daily, so it’s good for me to practice daily too. I know that this series will help me to improve me photography. Even if it’s only by a little it will be worth well worth it, because I want to be the best artist that I can be, and communicate my vision through pictures as strongly as possible.

Weekly Photo Project, Week 8

Week eight of this project proved to be especially difficult. Not every day was hard to capture an image, but three of the seven days almost didn’t have a picture. Luckily, I had purchased a Fujifilm XF10, and it arrived just in time to help me out. I really do believe that I would have faltered on at least one day, if not two, if this camera wasn’t sitting in my pocket begging to be used. The downside is that, while I was able to capture an image on those days, a couple of the photographs this week aren’t the strongest pictures.

Weekly Photo Project, Week 7

Keeping up with a photo-a-day project is not easy, as there are days when making even one exposure requires me to stop all the bustle, set everything down for a moment, and somehow squeeze in time for photography. That can be hard! Life sometimes pulls in many different directions all at once. So far I have not missed a single day (knock on wood), but to help increase the probability of success I have purchased a new tool: the Fujifilm XF10. Because it is pocket-sized I can have a camera with me more often, which means I’m more likely to make exposures on those days when time is limited.

In order to purchase the camera I had to sell my distressed X-E1, which I didn’t really want to do, but I had to. The XF10 will help me with this project much more than the X-E1. Besides, if I want to, I can distress another X-E1 in the future, which I might do once this project is finished.

Something that you might notice in the photographs below is that autumn has set in. The trees have begun changing color. So far it looks like it will be a mediocre year for fall colors in Utah. Last autumn was quite colorful. I need to get out there while I can because winter is just around the corner and the fall colors, even though they just arrived, are not going to hang on much longer.

Sometimes when it’s not practical to go somewhere to photograph, I find that capturing an image at my house is a wonderful challenge. What I appreciate about it is that often times I must construct the scene from scratch. When you are out somewhere you most often stumble upon something that’s already there. You don’t typically move stuff around. But inside my home, I’m grabbing different things and placing them in specific places. It’s all very purposeful, and the more creative I am with that the better the images turn out. Four of the seven photographs here were taken inside my home.

Weekly Photo Project, Week 5

This photo-a-day challenge, in which I’m attempting to capture at least one picture every day for a year, is so far going well. I’m taking things one week at a time, so that if I miss a day I can keep going. I’ll just tack a week or two onto the end if it comes to it. Hopefully it won’t come to that and I’ll be able to string 52 consecutive weeks together.

Some days I capture a bunch of pictures, and the challenge is determining which one to pick to represent that day. Other days I’ve been fortunate to have a couple exposures to choose from. There was one day that I only made one exposure, and thankfully it wasn’t a terrible photograph. Some days I’m able to do a lot of photography, while a few days each week it’s a real challenge to find the time to do any photography at all. Life has a way of being in the way sometimes. That’s alright, as I’m trying to overcome the challenges by forcing myself to pick up a camera at least once, even if it doesn’t seem like time will permit. It’s working so far, and I’m crossing my fingers that this project will continue to go smoothly over the next 11 months.

Cadillac Spray Cans – Amarillo, TX – Fujifilm X-Pro2 & 16mm – I-70 / Route 66

West Texas is vast and empty. There are small towns scattered around, most of which have seen better days, and a few larger cities. But, for the most part, there’s a whole lot of nothing. It’s a rural life that’s lived here, and that is likely an understatement.

You might think that the opening paragraph was written with a negative tone, but I don’t mean it to be. I’m actually quite fascinated with the region, and I’d love to spend some significant time photographing it. Each little town offers something of photographic interest. There’s something that draws me in. There’s a story to tell.

My photography instructor in collage was June Van Cleef. Her most important work was capturing the life and times of rural west Texas. She spent years in the small dusty towns that seemed to be barely hanging on, camera in hand, capturing the people who called the place home. Perhaps it’s her perspective that I took away from those many months in her classroom.

I don’t have a real draw to west Texas other than I can clearly see the photographic potential. I have never made the time to act on that potential. Like most people, I just pass through on the way to somewhere else. That’s what highways are good for: taking you someplace else. Like all the times before, I came and went quickly, and saw the view from behind the car windshield. Someday, though, I will take my time and immerse myself in capturing this rural land. I hope to, anyway.

Weekly Photo Project, Week 3

Another week of photographs done. So far I haven’t missed any days in my quest to capture at least one photograph every 24 hours for a year, which is good. I’m taking things one week at a time, though, so that if I’m not able to do it here and there, I can keep moving forward. I’ll just tack a week or two onto the end if I need to. Still, my aim is to not miss any days and string 365 daily pictures together. I hope that you enjoy watching this project unfold on Fuji X Weekly!

Weekly Photo Project, Week 2

Welcome to week two of my photo-a-day project! I’m taking things one week at a time, capturing at least one photograph each day for seven days, and hoping to string 52 weeks together. These seven images were all captured using my trusty Fujifilm X100F, which is such a great camera for this type of project because it’s easy to carry around and does a great job at making exposures.

I used my Agfa Scale Film Simulation recipe for all of the black-and-white images. I used my Dramatic Classic Chrome Film Simulation recipe, slightly modified, for the color image. Enjoy!

Photoessay: Along The Highway, Part 1 – Colorado

41854934150_e3c9f3ff2d_z

Uncertain – Delta, CO – Fujifilm X-Pro2 & 60mm – US HWY 50

My wife and I, along with our four children, took a road trip across several states over the course of 16 days, and we returned about a week-and-a-half ago. It was, at times, especially epic, and we saw some amazing places. I, of course, captured the whole thing using my Fujifilm X series cameras.

Upon returning, one of the first things I did was review the images that I had captured. I noticed that there were a lot of pictures of things I saw along our highways. Oftentimes when we stopped for gas or to eat, I’d capture some images of what was around. I had many photographs of different sights that were found along the highway. Some were immediately off the highway, while others were perhaps a half-block away from the highway. I felt that, as long as the highway was clearly visible from where I captured the photograph, it was alright to include it in this series.

I decided to break this Photoessay, called Along The Highway, into several segments organized by states. The first part, which are viewing now, is Colorado. These are the pictures that I captured while traversing along the highways in that state.

The highways in Colorado were open and oftentimes lonely. That is, outside of the city limits, as we sat in bumper-to-bumper traffic in Denver at one point. Sometimes towns were far apart and it seemed like we were far outside of civilization. We crossed mountain passes and saw some amazing scenery! Many of the towns we drove through had quite obviously seen better days, and they sharply contrasted the natural wonder that was never far away. It was almost as if these communities were not supposed to be there, that they were holding on with their last inner strength against an unseen force to rid them from this place. Either that, or the residents lost sight of the wonder around them, and neglected to maintain what those who came before had begun. This is not unique to Colorado, but a phenomenon seen throughout the west. It was simply more obvious this trip. It was, at times, depressing. But the highway compelled us on.

Weekly Photo Project, Week 1

A Fuji X Weekly reader shared with me his Photo-A-Day project, which is a personal challenge to capture at least one picture each day. This is a great way to photographically exercise. Athletes practice daily. Musicians practice daily. If you want to be great at something and stay great at it, you need to regularly challenge yourself. This is just as true with your camera as it is with everything else.

I’ve wanted to do a photo-a-day project for many years, but life has a way of getting in the way of such things. I did start one once and made it about three months into it before missing a day. There are times when capturing just one picture is impractical. That’s why I haven’t even attempted this kind of project for several years.

What I’m doing different this time is taking things one week at a time, which is perfect for this blog because of the name, Fuji X Weekly. My goal is to capture at least one picture each day for seven days. Then, the next week, begin again. I hope to string 52 consecutive weeks together, but, if I can’t do that and I miss a day during the week, I will try again the following week. So it might take longer than one year to complete this 52 week series. How long it ends up taking depends on how much life gets in the way between now and then. Still, I’m challenging myself to not miss any days and capture at least one photography every day for a year.

I hope that you enjoy the pictures and that this series inspires you to try your own photo-a-day project.

Photoessay: Street Feet

35918316912_9f9d3db0bc_z

Stepping – SLC, UT – Fujifilm X100F

There are certain photo series that I’m actively working on, such as abandoned businesses in color (entitled Space Available), that are purposeful personal projects. Then there certain photo series that are more by happenstance, not created on purpose, where I notice a common thread among images. This series, Street Feet, falls into the latter category.

I had no intentions of this becoming a project. I didn’t try to make a series. It just sort of happened. I just subconsciously did it, and didn’t even notice that I had done so until reviewing my street photography images. I saw a pattern. I realized that I was creating these related pictures.

Street Feet is pretty straight forward: street-style black-and-white photographs of people’s feet. You can’t see the full body because I was photographing the lower extremities. Sometimes it’s a closeup of someone’s shoes, while other times the view is broader.

I used a Fujifilm X100F to capture these images. My Acros Film Simulation recipe was used for every picture, and the Digital Teleconverter was utilized for many. These are all out-of-camera JPEGs. Enjoy!
