Atlantic Sunrise — A Fujifilm Film Simulation Recipe

Lady Liberty at Sunset – New York, NY – Fujifilm X-T5 – Atlantic Sunrise

This new Fujifilm Recipe comes courtesy of Dan Allen, who has allowed me to publish a few of his other Recipe creations on Fuji X Weekly, including Kodak T-Max 100 Hard Tone and Kodak T-Max 100 Soft Tone. My favorite Provia-based Recipe, Provia Positive, is a variant of one that Dan made. This new one, called Atlantic Sunrise, is specifically for golden hour photography, intended to convey the vibrant colors of sunrises and sunsets, yet remaining true-to-life, producing realistic photos that don’t seem overdone.

While made for sunrises and sunsets, the Atlantic Sunrise Recipe is actually pretty good for anytime the sun is out, and can also be used for blue hour and nighttime photos sometimes. It wouldn’t be my top choice for portraits, but it’s great for landscapes, cityscapes, and things like that. Of course, where it is best utilized is during the warm natural light of golden hour.

An important note is that Dan recommends adjusting the White Balance Shift to +5 Red & -1 Blue for the pinks of pre-sunrise and post-sunset skies. All of the example photos in this article are with the standard +4 Red & -2 Blue WB Shift, but you may want to make the adjustment in the field when the sky is more pink than red. Also, for sunrise/sunset images, you’ll likely be using a minus Exposure Compensation, and for daylight images, you might be using a plus Exposure Comp. This Recipe is compatible with all fourth and fifth generation Fujifilm cameras, specifically the X-Pro3, X100V, X-T4, X-S10, X-E4, X-T30 II, X-H2s, X-H2, X-T5, X-S20, X100VI, X-T50, X-M5, X-E5, X-T30 III, GFX100S, GFX100 II, GFX100S II, and GFX100RF. For the X-T3 and X-T30, if you ignore Color Chrome FX Blue, you will get very similar (but not quite identical) results, something that Dan has done on his X-T3, and he was happy with the results. Thanks, Dan, for creating and sharing this Recipe!
