Last year, I started my infrared photography journey when I purchased a Fujifilm X-T4 ES full-spectrum IR camera. Since then, I’ve published seven infrared Film Simulation Recipes for the X-T4 ES, which can also be used on full-spectrum converted X-Trans IV (except the X-T3 & X-T30) and X-Trans V cameras. You must have a full-spectrum model to use these Recipes, which requires an expensive and invasive procedure from a third-party vendor; otherwise, the X-T4 ES (“Extended Spectrum”) is a full-spectrum camera briefly offered by Fujifilm to the general public (it’s very difficult to find, but in my opinion totally worth owning). If you have a “normal” (non-converted) camera, these Recipes will not work.
One camera that people have commonly converted (as common as it gets, anyway) is the Fujifilm X-T3. While the X-T3 is X-Trans IV, it has JPEG options more similar to X-Trans III—it’s missing some that are available on later X-Trans IV models. Because of this, my seven infrared Recipes won’t work on a full-spectrum converted X-T3 or X-T30. Dan Allan has a full-spectrum X-T3, and he really wanted to use my Aerochrome v2 Recipe, so he modified it to be compatible with his camera. It’s not 100% the same, but pretty close, and quite nice. Those with a full-spectrum converted X-T3 or X-T30 can now join the infrared Recipe fun!

Dan was kind to share his modification with me (and all of you), and also allowed me to publish his wonderful photos in this article, which you’ll find below (thank you, Dan!). If you have an X-Trans III full-spectrum model, this Recipe will work by ignoring Color Chrome Effect, but it will render a little different (feel free to try, though). If you have a Fujifilm X-T4 ES—or an X-Trans IV (other than the X-T3 & X-T30) or X-Trans V camera that has been full-spectrum modified—this Recipe will work by choosing Grain size Small, Color Chrome FX Blue set to Off, and Clarity set to 0. Depending on your preferences, you might actually like this version a bit better. The blue sky is the most obvious difference (interestingly, it seems slightly less divergent in Dan’s pictures than in the set above), but there are other more subtle variances; however, the overall vibe is the same between the original Aerochrome V2 Recipe and the new version. This Recipe requires three filters: Kolari Vision IR Chrome filter, Hoya G(XO) Yellow-Green filter and Tiffen Yellow 2 #8 filter. The IR Chrome filter is intended for infrared photography, while the Yellow-Green and Yellow filters are for B&W film. I’m not sure if the order matters, but I have the Yellow filter first (closest to the lens), the IR Chrome next, and the Yellow-Green last (furthest from the lens).
Edit: Dan informed me that he has the IR Chrome filter first (closest to the lens), followed by the G(XO), and then the Yellow 2 #8 (furthest from the lens). He isn’t sure if the order matters, but it might. He also wanted to mention that his conversion was with Kolari, with their anti-reflection glass, which might have a minimal impact on the outcome vs the X-T4 ES.

Extra cool 😎👍
Nice addition to the your pool of FS / Aerochrome recipies.
Well done 👏
And great sample images 👌
My big thx to Dan 🙏
And happy FS shooting with your X-T3 FS Dan 😁
Now that I’ve received my lovely X-E5 (gorgeous camera 😍), I’m waiting that IRreCams.de is coming back from his summer holiday so to send him for conversion to FS my little X-E4 😉
In the meantime in September when I’ll be allowed by my surgeon to use back my gear (my thumb is healing slowly but steadily), I’ll be glad to try out this present recipe and adapt it on my X-A3 FS (Bayer). Might give interesting results 🤔😉
I hope you get the green light from your doctor!
Many thanks Ritchie 🙏
Will need to wait September at the earliest 😓
And upon configuring my X-E5 (gorgeous camera 😍) along my other cameras whom settings were updated a bit so to match when possible as I like each bodie share the maximum same settings / setup as the others so when picking up one it works the same way without efforts and double thinking. Only dedicate physical dials and options making the camera special and worth having like the X-E5 or GFX100RF or X100VI along my X-T5, and the recipes setup differ 😉 Well on doing those actions my thumb ended hurting after the different sessions (I went step by steps though).
Hence not ready yet for a ride yet 😭
And I was warned to be careful 🤕
It is definitely a long and painful recovery process 🤒 Absolutely not like in Hollywood films & series !
I try to do the same. I prefer them to be as similar as possible. I have a couple where I set it up a little different, and it drives me nuts, and I always tell myself that I need to fix it, but I always forget because I don’t use those two models very often anymore. And then there’s the GFX100S II, which is just completely different, and I dislike that about it.
I wish you the best and speediest recovery!
Well thanks a lot Ritchie 🤞 (I can do the gesture now 😉).
Extra nice to share the same way of liking our camera being setup 👍😎
I can understand your frustration in that respect!
This one of the reason I finally upgraded my camera fleet to X-Trans IV, and then to V… After a time I was having nerves and misses on picking up a v-1 or v-2 sensor generation 🤯
I would say on picking up back now my XQ2 (the only alowed camera due to its size and weights for the time being for my hand / thumb (I feel already very fortunate as I can shoot back 🥳 ). The XQ2 is still a very good little camera in 2025. Of course limited by a small sensor and high ISO is not is best, but still.
Limitations are good for creative photography.
But it became ‘retro’ compared to most recent models and tech.
So I would wish for a XQ3!
Therefore it became a bit a different camera, like using back a X-Pro1 or X-E1 (or even an original X100). It is a Fuji, but…
Therefore I went back to my 10 years old Fuji setup: using film simulation bracketing, only 1 recipe setup via the only custom bank (for B&W) and more so using a LOT the Advanced Filters (Pop, Dynamic, Miniature and the 1 colour B&W ones) for very fun creative photographic moments 😁😎
On X-Trans V level, well I can see now definitely a generation gap coming: on one side you have the ‘older’ X-T5 & X100VI sharing the same menus / options and behaving, on the other side you have the GFX100RF and X-E5 sharing a lot of common genes (aspect ratio, the control lever, added goodies). The control lever latter adding a lot of versatility with extra customer dials (well the C-T5 still had the customisable tulip dial fortunately).
You can see definitely an evolution in camera design and build from Fujifilm from the early start of X-Trans IV & V and now. Very interesting. And I’m happy of the evolution.
Once you tasted the GFX100RF or X-E5, it’s hard not wishing the goodies they bring on the previous models!
Some not possible due to physical dials difference, but the rest could easily come via firmware update like the Classic Viewfinder or clear aspect ration setup.
One upgrade which is pissing me of, is the Instax Link BT printers compatibilty!
On the X-E5, it is a real pleasure and blaze to pair my 3 Instax Link Printers (Mini, Square, Wide). All of them work like a charm and flawlessly on the X-E5. Simply power one of them (do not use the printer apps on your smartphone at the same time and nearby your camera & printer), wait a couple of seconds and you’re good to go 👌
I still fail to understand why the others don’t have the feature! Pure firmware nonsense 🤬 WTF!
I’m also pissed of, and it drive me each time nuts is that the manual lenses are stored differently now in each bank 🤯🤬
With the X-Pro3, you can store your custom WB and the related rest all differentlty in the 7 custom bank BUT manual lenses setup is still common.
When you want to change of manual lenses, you make the update only once which is awesome.
On latest models, you need to repeat the operation 7 times 😭 WTF (bis!)
I really hate this. Very time time consuming and if you forget doing the update and complete the config, you end up with wrong settings in your Exif, which you need then to remember to update during cataloguing time.
A real pain!
That being said, I spent a LOT of time last WE tweaking a LOT my X-E4 + X-T5 + X100VI so to get the most alignments to my GFX100RF and X-E5.
It was a bit vise-versa operation too 😉
Now I’m quite happy of the results (and being able to backup the setups via the XApp!).
My X-Pro3 & GFX 50R have been also retweaked but to a lesser extent. I tend now to let those 2 on the hyper-specialised side: my X-Pro3 being a ‘Noir’ film B&W only camera (like Omar X-T20), the GFX 50R being now dedicated to use my Nikon Ai manuel lenses (gorgeous combo).
But all of them share the same core settings : AF / Q & My Menu & touch screen setup. Fujifilm cameras are really great for heavy user customisation, so you still succeed on doing certain alignment and get dirt of backward compatibility (IT term reuse 😉).
But it is time consuming for sure. I’m not doing it every time!
Now I can pick up either one them and enjoy with great pleasure the physical sensation differenciation.
It is like picking a pair of shoes depending on your mood, how your dress and weather condition.
You can still walk with all of them, but the look & feel are just what matters.
It is really fun and enjoyable collection 😉
I’m curious if Fujifilm will make more cameras with the 1″ sensor. An XQ3 might not be far fetched.
What’s up with the notifications in the app for this recipe? I’ve received at least 4 yesterday and I just had one today.
It definitely shouldn’t have done that. It’s only supposed to notify once. With this Recipe, I made a mistake (put the wrong web address), so I had to fix that, which might have triggered a second notification. Are you on Apple or Android? Which operating system?
I’m on Android
Thanks for letting me know. Two more questions:
– Which Android Operating System are you currently on?
– Did you open the Fuji X Weekly App after any of the notifications? Some possible answers: Yes, more than once. Yes, only after the last one. Yes, only once, after one of the earlier notifications. No, haven’t opened the app recently.
I appreciate the feedback. Hopefully this can get fixed without too much difficulty.
I’m on Android 15 on One UI 7. I haven’t opened the app at all iirc, but I might be wrong (I may have taped the first notification but I don’t remember doing so).
Thanks for the support, it’s appreciated. Hopefully won’t happen again 🙂
I wonder if it has something to do with the Operating System. The App is built on Android OS, and Samsung One UI is different—a custom shell built overtop of the Android OS, but is its own unique thing. It’s intended to be fully compatible with Android Apps, but it is divergent, and that could be the cause of the problem. I’ll look into it. With Apple, things tend to be pretty consistent (hardware and software), but with Android, you have so many different brands with unique quirks, and very small things that don’t cause issues for one device can cause problems for another. Think of it like a freeway: in one example, all the cars are similar sized and driving similar speeds; in another example, all the vehicles are different types and sizes, some driving really fast, some driving really slow. One is a lot more chaotic and unpredictable than the other. Hopefully we can get this issue resolved.
