3 Must-Try Fujifilm Recipes For Beginners

Mission San Xavier del Bac – Tucson, AZ – Fujifilm X-E5 – Kodak Vericolor VPS

Two weeks ago when I published 3 Must-Try Fujifilm Recipes, I noted that the idea for the article came from Dan Bailey, who I met in-person at Fujikina NYC last month. When people are new to Fujifilm cameras and Film Simulation Recipes, it’s difficult to know where to begin. There are over 400 Recipes on the Fuji X Weekly website and in the App, and figuring out which ones to use first can be overwhelming. Dan suggested that people should start with just three. Finding and programming seven Recipes can be a lot; however, a list of only three Recipes is a lot easier for the newcomer, and a great way to get your feet wet. After that, if you want to try others, you can add one or two (or up to four) more if you’d like.

Dan’s idea is that there could be many different groups of three Recipes, with various styles or use-cases in mind. Maybe one could be for a 1970’s aesthetic. Perhaps another is for portrait photographers. Another could be for your summer vacation. The potential ideas are endless! And, he suggested, that various photographers could come up with their own lists. This is the very first of those lists from a photographer other than myself, and it’s by Thomas Schwab, who has created or co-created a bunch of different Recipes on Fuji X Weekly. Thanks, Thomas, for sharing this with all of us! The Recipes below are his suggestions for someone new to Fujifilm and photography.

Kodachrome 64

“At the top in position C1,” Thomas told me, “is Kodachrome 64. Why? It always fits no matter the situation! If in doubt about the Daylight White Balance, simply use Auto Ambiance instead. The results have never disappointed me. Of course, it is best in sunny weather, which means that everyone will have their own sense of success at the beginning. Although an allrounder, it shows its strengths at street photography.”

Kodak Vericolor VPS

“In second place,” he said, “I would put Kodak Vericolor VPS. It has significantly stronger saturation in the colors, and is especially suitable in autumn and for hiking in nature. For me, it’s always a favorite!”

FRGMT B&W

“Of course,” Thomas stated, “a black and white Recipe should not be missing and is therefore in third place. While I struggled to like this Recipe at first, I was finally able to make friends with FRGMT B&W on the Fujifilm GFX100RF!”

AgfaChrome RSX II 200 Expired

“Alternatively,” he added, “AgfaChrome RSX II 200 Expired could be in second place, or a bonus Recipe for C4. From my point of view, with overcast skies or rain, it creates wonderful atmospheric images.”

    Greets.

With FRGMT B&W you get the very essence of monochrome. A good Ortho might be an even better start.

Either way, loose the grain. We didn’t obsessively battle grainy film for 80 years, just to bring it back as a trend. I despair!

    Malcolm.
